Isabella (Cote First Nation) was shamed for wearing her ribbon skirt to her school’s formal day in December 2020. Isabella received an outpouring of national support following the event including the first and second reading of a bill to mark January 4th as a national holiday to honour the ribbon skirt as a “centuries-old spiritual symbol of womanhood, identity, adaptation and survival” and “a direct connection to Mother Earth and its sacred medicines.”
