The Aboriginal Friendship Centres of Saskatchewan (AFCS) is proud to announce its partnership with Innovation Federal Credit Union as part of their Food Security Campaign. This collaboration aims to address food insecurity in northern and remote communities, ensuring that families have access to the nutritious food they need.
According to the Cost of Healthy Eating in Saskatchewan Report 2022, the cost of feeding a family of four varies by region:
- In Northern Towns like Buffalo Narrows and Ile-à-la-Crosse, a family of four is estimated to pay $294.36 a week for food, which is about $3.50 per meal.
- In the Far North, such as La Loche, the cost is $464.37/week or about $5.52 per meal.
These figures highlight the critical role Friendship Centres play in addressing food insecurity across Saskatchewan’s urban and northern Indigenous populations.
At the Ile-à-la-Crosse, Buffalo Narrows, and La Loche Friendship Centres, food security remains a growing concern. Every day, individuals and families seek support at these Centres, whether for a warm meal, connection, or additional resources. With limited funding, these Centres work tirelessly to provide meals to those in need.
Thanks to this partnership, the impact goes far beyond providing meals.
With continued support, we can work together to reduce food insecurity trends in our communities and provide a stronger foundation for those who rely on Friendship Centres—not just for meals, but for a path toward overall well-being.
