AFCS Announcement: Call for Indigenous Artists

The Aboriginal Friendship Centres of Saskatchewan (AFCS) is looking to commission an Indigenous artist to design and create a backdrop that can be utilized for AFCS events and gatherings and be on display in our office when not used officially. 

The intent is to showcase local Indigenous talent, while providing a beautiful and unique backdrop to events and gatherings that AFCS hosts. The content of the artwork must be reflective of AFCS’ hope and dream, vision, mission and values.

Vision: 

  • AFCS is respected and foundational to Friendship Centres in their support of urban Indigenous People in Saskatchewan.  

Mission:

  • AFCS is the collective voice for urban Indigenous People. We serve Friendship Centres by sourcing opportunities for positive impact, promoting effective Friendship Centre governance and operations, and developing and upholding standards for collective success.  

Values:

  • Accountable, Culturally Aware, Inclusive, Respect. 

Guidelines:

  1. The artwork must be 16 feet tall and 8 feet high and either created on or mounted on four 4×8 sheets of plywood. 
  1. The artwork must be able to be taken apart in 4×8 sheets of plywood for transportation purposes. 
  1. The artwork will either be placed in stands or hung. 
  1. Mediums must be permanent and long lasting. 
  1. Appropriate for all ages. 
  1. No violent or traumatizing content. 
  1. Will not intentionally cause any mental, physical, emotional, or spiritual harm. 

In addition to the artwork, artists will need to submit the following by January 31, 2026:

  1. Title of the artwork. 
  1. Brief artist biography. 
  1. Medium description including what was used to create the artwork. 
  1. Land Acknowledgement including when and where the artwork was created. 
  1. Meaning of the artwork including a description of the artwork and what the artist was trying to convey. 

Interested artists will need to submit (1) a preliminary design with description; (2) complete budget of no more than $10,000 – including materials, supplies and artist compensation; (3) portfolio of previous works; (4) timeline of milestones to [email protected] by 3:00 pm, Friday, December 5, 2025. The successful artist will be contacted on December 19, 2025.
